Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the classic Himalaya treks of Nepal. The trail ascends from thick forest and hillside rice terraces to well above the tree line to the starkly beautiful Annapurna South Glacier Valley and the base camp site for countless summit expeditions.
The trailhead is easily reached by a short drive from the relaxed and beautiful lake-side city of Pokhara. From Nayapul, it’s packs and boots on, and the steady ascending trek up the valley beneath the towering mass of Mardi Himal 5,553m and Mount Machapuchare 6,993m to the east, and the many icy summits to the west stretching from Annapurna South all the way to Annapurna III farther to the north. The mountains scenery is breathtaking along every section of this trail. The culmination is to stand at 4,130m Annapurna Base Camp and be surrounded by snow-capped Himalaya peaks. The experience is exhilarating and humbling at the same time. The mountains radiate their silent power to your core.
The trek is moderately easy to complete. The trail quality is excellent and the maximum altitude is far less than some of the other big-name treks. There are also excellent teahouse accommodation options at every village. The entire trail is within the Annapurna Conservation Area, and so you can be assured the natural environmental experience you are seeking will be there for you and future generations. And, if you trek during the warming spring months, the lower trail is awash with rhododendron and orchid in full bloom.
This is an excellent first-Himalaya-trek option if you are looking to trek Nepal for this first time. The scenic rewards for effort are far beyond any other Nepal trekking route.
