Champadevi Hike Overview
Champadevi Hike is one of the most rewarding day trips from Kathmandu, offering a perfect combination of natural beauty, cultural significance, and panoramic Himalayan views. Located on the southern ridge of the Kathmandu Valley at 2,278 meters, Champadevi is a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The trail passes through lush pine and rhododendron forests, charming hillside villages, and tranquil landscapes, making it an ideal choice for hikers of all fitness levels. Champadevi hike, southwest of Kathmandu Valley, is a fulfilling day trip for those who enjoy nature and religious sites.
This 1-day hiking trip begins with a short scenic drive from Kathmandu to Bhanjyang, followed by a steady uphill trek to the summit. On clear days, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of Langtang, Gauri Shankar, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal, and even Mount Everest in the far distance. The descent to Puspalal Park completes a circular route before returning to Kathmandu. This hike is perfect for travelers seeking a short yet fulfilling outdoor experience away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Most hikers start at Pharping or the Hattiban Resort gate, following a clear map through pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. The hike is about 10km round-trip and takes around 4 to 6 hours. The ridge walk has views of Kathmandu, the Bagmati River, and places such as Khokana and Bungmati. Champadevi hike is generally seen as easy to moderate in difficulty, which makes it suitable for families and novice hikers wanting a quiet break from city life.
Best Season on Champadevi Hike
For the best Himalayan views on your Champadevi hike, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are ideal. Spring brings blooming flowers and warm weather, with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Fall offers clear skies and air after the monsoon, perfect for taking photos of mountains like Langtang and Ganesh Himal.
You can hike Champadevi from Kathmandu at any time of year, but other seasons have drawbacks. Winter (December to February) has good mountain views but can be cold, dropping to around 5°C at the top. It’s not advised to hike during monsoon season (June to August) because the trails get slippery, and clouds usually block views. Hikers should also watch out for leeches during the rainy season. For the most pleasant hike, the clear weather after the monsoon is best.
Phamting Vajrayogini Temple
Phamting Vajrayogini Temple, found in the old town of Pharping, is a key Tantric site in the Kathmandu Valley. Founded in the 11th century by the Phamtingpa brothers, noted students of the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa, the temple helped spread Vajrayogini teachings from India to Tibet. The current Newari-style building, dating to the 17th century, sits between the Asura and Yanglesho Caves, where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have reached enlightenment.

The temple has a striking red-faced statue of the goddess, often called Indra Kachö or Phamthing Yogini. It’s unusual in that both Hindu and Buddhist worshippers come here. People visiting the temple often go to the nearby Dakshinkali Temple as well. The area is full of prayer flags, old stone carvings, and a long tradition of meditation, making it a spiritual center.
