About the TIJI Festival

Tiji Festival is one of the most spectacular and spiritually important festivals in the walled city of Lomanthang, Upper Mustang, Nepal. It falls in mid-May every year and is deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist traditions. “Tiji” means “prayers for world peace”. This three-day-long festival is celebrated with elaborate rituals, masked dances, and colorful ceremonies by local monks, which denote the victory of good over evil. Sacred performances showcase the triumph of positive forces over negative energies, representing dancers as deities, protectors, and symbolic demons. The Tiji Festival is a centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist festival celebrated in the Kingdom of Lo, Upper Mustang, Nepal.

Experience the vibrant three-day Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang with our 12-day jeep tour, exploring ancient monasteries, walled cities, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.

During the Tiji Festival, visitors to Mustang are fortunate enough to view traditional Tibetan dances such as the chham, or mask dances, among other ritual performances that expressively present Buddhist teachings in a visually captivating manner. It is one of those rare occasions to observe the monastic culture, local customs, and Tibetan heritage of Mustang. Besides the dances, one can visit centuries-old monasteries, interact with the inhabitants, and enjoy the unique desert-like landscapes, cliffs, and Himalayan views surrounding Lomanthang. More than just a cultural event, the Tiji Festival is indeed a spiritual experience-from devotion down to celebration by a community steeped deeply in the region’s centuries-old Buddhist practices.

It is a three-day festival:

First Day – Rituals and Preparations: Sacred spaces, mandalas, and offerings are prepared by monks. Rituals are performed in order to invite deities and purify the surroundings.

Second Day – Masked Dances: The monks enact elaborate dances in colored masks, representing the battles between the positive forces and the demons. These sacred and theatrical dances give spiritual lessons by symbolic storytelling.

Third Day – Conclusion and Blessings: Events come to a close with the dissolution of sand mandalas, accompanied by community blessing rituals.

It retains the old traditions of Mustang District, strengthens the social bond of the community, and attracts travelers from different parts of the world who want to observe this rich cultural heritage. Pamfa did an incredible job organizing our trip. Her communication before the trip was excellent, helping us set up our dream itinerary with ease. She was attentive to our needs and ensured every detail was perfect. And she was very welcoming in Kathmandu, sending her son to pick us up in the airport and coming the first day to make sure everything was alright, we had all the needed papers, and we understood them! Thanks to Pamfa, we had an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!
